Math Hacks #3: The Inbetweener

I like to call the number 11 the Inbetweener.

It’s a pretty technique. Here’s why:

Try working out 11 x 24.

Take the 2 and 4, add them together and what do you get? 6.

Now put the 6 between the 2 and 4

We get 264.

11 x 24 = 264

Now what would happen if the two digits added up to more than 10, for example, what would we do if it were 11 x 39?

3+9 gives us 12.

In this case we would pop the 2 in the middle as before, and we would add the 1 to the 3, to give us 4.

11 x 39 = 429

Now try these for yourself:

11 x 45, 11 x 77 and 11 x 32

Next step: impress teachers with how fast you are at inbetweener math!
